Miyu Kurihara - SGW Labs
Petersham Nurseries constantly looks for some inspirational products to enhance its range. When visiting SGW Lab, we found what we were looking for. SGW Lab is a ceramic studio founded by the artist Yuta Segawa in 2018. The mission of SGW Lab is to think about the significance of craftsmanship in the context of William Morris, who believed in the worth of human labour and that Art is to be made by the people and for the people, as a happiness to the maker and the user. In this era, the significance of craftsmanship, the worth of human labour, is being questioned again. That’s why SGW Lab recalls Morris's idea: "Art is to be made by the people and for the people, as a happiness to the maker and the user".
Lara was amazed by the SGW Lab philosophy and by Miyu’s creations and her hand painted ceramics. Miyu Kurihara draws upon her heritage when creating her ceramics pieces, inspired by both Japanese kimono design and traditional Asian ceramics. Every piece created by Miyu is made by hand and individually drawn with intricate detail.
Having learned brush techniques and textile design in Japan and London, she incorporated these skills into her work and uses traditional blue and white porcelain craftmanship that originate in China and Japan.
Lara chose a selection of beautiful miniature vases as an exclusive collection for Petersham Nurseries. She was particularly inspired by the idea behind this collection: the human body has no limits. Miniature pottery is challenging, but it shows what a human body can make on such a small scale.
Miyu created a special collection for Spring where she painted four kinds of flowers which are familiar with Petersham Nurseries: Cherry Blossom, Magnolia, Flaming parrot tulip and Grape hyacinth. Flowers are drawn and painted one by one on miniature pots thrown by Yuta Segawa and finished with painting genuine gold lustre.
